About Face Gains Entry Into important GI Film Festival
Chicago, IL (May 1, 2007) Buddy Pictures is proud to announce that About Face: The Story of the Jewish Refugee Soldiers of WWII is an official selection of the 2007 GI Film Festival (GIFF). GIFF is the first film festival in the nation to exclusively celebrate the successes and sacrifices of the American military through the medium of film. The three-day festival will be held on May 26-28, 2007, Memorial Day Weekend, in Washington, DC, at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center and will be hosted by award-winning actor Gary Sinise. Also in attendance will be Director/Screenwriter John Milius (Apocalypse Now, The Hunt for Red October, Red Dawn), Director John Dahl (The Great Raid, Rounders) and Director Ron Maxwell (Gods and Generals, Gettysburg).
The GIFF will present films from new and established international and domestic filmmakers that honor the heroic stories of the American Armed Forces and the worldwide struggle for freedom and liberty. Some of the films screened will be fan favorites. Others will be screened for the first time. All will in some way express the courage and selflessness of our fighting men and women and the value of their work. The GI Film Festival is open to filmmakers of every experience level, from first-timers to veteran directors and producers. Prizes will be awarded to winners of three main categories: feature, documentary, and film shorts. "We are looking forward to remembering all those soldiers who gave their lives for this country at this very special event, and to screening the film with an audience made up of veterans and veterans' families, whom we honor," says director Steve Karras. "We are really looking forward to this film festival and to sharing our veterans' stories, which we were so privileged to be able to tell in this film. We are so honored to have been chosen," states co-director Rose Lizarraga. "We will be with fellow filmmakers who understand the importance of telling the stories behind the wars, and the impact they have on our history and our culture."
"About Face" is a feature-length documentary that tells the remarkable yet previously untold story of thousands of young Jewish émigrés who fled Germany and Austria in the early days of Hitler's regime only to perform an "about face" marching back to Europe and North Africa to confront their enemy and fight alongside American GI's and British Tommies in WWII. Steven Karras is the director/producer of the film. Rose Lizarraga is the co-director/producer.
Presently, "About Face" is currently touring the film festivals. The producers are currently in talks with distributors regarding licensing of the film for domestic as well as international markets.
